Recent studies have indicated that transesterification may be one of the most efficient methods of alkyl esters (biodiesel) production. However, although there would be huge environmental benefits, the high cost is an obstacle that blocks an increased use of biodiesel. This obstacle could be overcome if oilseed yields and processing technology could be improved.
In this work, acid-catalysed in situ transesterification of pulverized Raphia hookeri mesocarp (PRM) with lower aliphatic alcohols was investigated.
The aim was to reduce the long production system associated with using pre-extracted oil and to maximize alkyl ester yield. The transesterification reactions were performed approximately at the boiling temperatures of the respective alcohols and large alcohol to PRM molar ratios. The yield of the alkyl esters ranged from 88 to 97% while the purity ranged from 86 to 96% . The physical properties of the alkyl ester were within earlier.
